SEVEN FOR SUNDAY

Jimmy Clanton from the 50's - Dig that hair style !!
And today.
I mentioned Jimmy Clanton in the previous post and have today posted his biggest hit Just a dream along with his version of Venus in Blue Jeans ( Mark Wynter had the biggest version in NZ). He is still performing today.

The Browns - 3 Bells
Laurie London with the religious He's got the whole world in his hands. I seem to remember that Laurie was 13 when he made this one hit wonder. He was born in 1944 so the song came out in 1957.
Connie Francis - Jealous Heart
Ricky Nelson - Take these chains from my heart. Partly sung in French; this version gives a whole new take on this song and rated by me as better than the Ray Charles version.
Monotones - Book of love. Yes I wonder who did write it!
Listen right here.

MORE 1950 PLUS

More from the 1950's when music was music. Basically I like the era from about 1955 through to 1970. But as you see it does range from 1920 forward but nothing much from the past 20 - 30 years.

Domenico Modugno (1928 - 1966) - Volare. Originally in Italian 'Nel blu dipinto do blu'
A world wide smash hit covered in the US by Dean Martin and later Bobby Rydell.
When entered into the Eurovision Song Contest this standard, that swept the world, could only come 3rd.
Later he became an Italian Member of Parliament.

Steve Lawrence - Party Doll - the Buddy Knox song
Debbie Reynolds - Tammy - from the film of the same name
Diamonds - Words of Love. The Buddy Holly song also covered in the best version of all by The Beatles - better than Buddy.

SUNDAY SELECTION

Today we have a Sunday selection of songs led off by Tab Hunter who at 74 looks as young as ever.

Tab says he does not want to be remembered as a gay icon; he doesn’t support same-sex marriage and finds the tactics of some gay rights activists obnoxious.

Hunter, who achieved fame in the 1950s as a star of film, television and music, holds old-school beliefs on matters of faith and sexual politics. A devout Catholic who attends Mass more than once a week, Hunter is also openly gay and lives with his partner of 23 years.

Tab Hunter - Young love. The other version was of course Sonny James.
Billy Fury - Collette
Tommy Steele - A handful of songs
Paul Anka - Eso Beso.
Alvin Stardust - Pretend
Bobby Darin - Lost love.  A talent lost at such a young age but in those few years achieved so much.
Joe Dowell - Wooden Heart. An Elvis song from G I Blues covered because they decided not release it as a single (at least in the USA) for the King.
Garry Glitter - Donna
Jimmy Jones - Handy man

4 LADIES AND FRED

Shattered lives - Nina & Frederik.

4 ladies - Bonnie, Annette, Alma and Nina plus her Fred are here.

Nina and Frederik - Sucu Sucu - It is an amazing story. A Danish singing couple who I saw performing in the old Wellington Town Hall in, I guess, 1968. Married in 1960 they were divorced in 1969 so it must have been just after their NZ tour. Frederik van Pallandt settled in the Philippines in the 1990s and got involved in a crime syndicate, for which he provided transportation for drug trafficking, and was shot dead with his second wife in 1994. Nina went on to act in various films.
Alma Cogan - 1958 - Sugartime
Annette Funicello-I Love You Baby. The Paul Anka song
Bonnie Lou - I`m Available and Seven Lonely Days.

ANDY & DANNY

Andy - Stewart that is. His big breakthrough was the Scottish Soldier.

Danny - Kaye that is. My favourite Danny Kaye film was Walter Mitty. The saying, a bit like Catch 22, has now entered the language.

Danny - and the Juniors that is.

Stewart sings -
A Scottish soldier
Scotland the Brave
Donald, where's yer troosers

Kaye sings -
Danny Kaye -Thumbelina
Danny Kaye - A lovely bunch of coconuts

And finally an unusual version of Danny & the Juniors singing not At the hop but Do the Bop. This was the original version that was subsequently reworded for release. An improvement in my opinion but still this an interesting version. .

All here.

SOME ODDS AND FUNNIES

Some odds to listen to today -

Val Doonican - Paddy McGinty's Goat. Irishman Val was very popular on TV in the 60's where his BBC show ran for 20 years. His trademark 'props' on his show were his cardigans and a rocking chair.

Bill Haley & his Comets - Joeys Song.
Bill had a bit of a revival with an instrumental?? Notice it is HIS Comets not THE Comets.

Spike Jones & His City Slickers - I Went To Your Wedding
Sheb Wooley - Purple people eater
Shelby F Wooley was a singer and actor (Giant, High Noon) and also recorded comedy under the name of Ben Colder (1921 - 2003)
Merle Haggard -Okie From Muskogee. Some great words that start to reflect my age.
Max Bygraves - You Need Hands.
Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard - Dear John Letter. The original - I posted the 'answer song' on the 15 February 2009.
